Event Details
Bernie McGann (saxophone); Warwick Alder (trumpet); Brendan Clarke (bass); Andrew Dickeson (drums).
Bernie McGann is one of Australia’s most celebrated jazz musicians with a unique alto saxophone style, now as well recognised in Europe and the USA as it is here in Australia. He began his career in the late 1950s and remains active as a performer, composer and recording artist. Emerging on the wave of energetic modern jazz that swept Australia in the late 50’s and early 60’s, he and his quartet reached beyond hard-bop, then the prevalent jazz form.
McGann’s daring strikes at the edge of tonality, speech-like inflections, tonal colours and stark emotionalism marked him as a serious soloist; with his striking compositions he became a leading, accomplished jazz figure over the following decades.
He has toured internationally and recorded with many renowned international artists including Sonny Stitt, Dewey Redman, Lester Bowie and Dave Liebman.
