Celebrating Haydn, Father of the String Quartet. Haydn’s Opus 20 quartets signify a turning point in the composer’s output, earning him the revered title of ‘Father of the String Quartet’.
It is believed that Benjamin Britten admired Haydn’s quartet writing so much, that he kept copies by his bedside. Britten’s first quartet, written when he was just 17 years of age, shows strong evidence of this admiration, while maintaining an unmistakable essence of his compositional style. Together Quartz perform a delightful program of Haydn, Britten and Percy Grainger, who, like Haydn, adored folk music and infused it with his own distinctive compositional style.
Quartz is a fresh new ensemble which unites four dynamic musicians – Caroline Hopson and Rachael Beesley (violins), Anna Webb (viola) and Zoe Wallace (cello). Highly acclaimed musicians, they have performed as part of renowned European and Australian ensembles and orchestras as well as various international music festivals.
Featured non-Australian music: Haydn, Britten
