Event Details

Met with an instant standing ovation at the 2016 Sydney Festival, the migration is a soul-searching response to life, love, family and cultural complexity from one of Australia’s most lauded jazz composers. The third in a series of acclaimed suites by Stu Hunter, the migration’s lush sonic grooves and deeply emotive melodies are direct from the exhilarating frontier of modern Australian jazz.

A rising star in modern jazz, Australian producer, pianist and composer Stu Hunter made his breakthrough with his lauded album, the muse (2007), followed by the award-winning sophomore suite, the gathering (2010) which The Australian declared “a milestone in contemporary jazz”. Performed with a masterful ten-piece band, the migration is a multi-dimensional celebration of life’s journey.

Commissioned in part by SIMA with the support of the Australia Council, we are thrilled to present this trailblazing work. Besides his own projects, Hunter has made a name behind the scenes accompanying the likes of Passenger, Silverchair and Katie Noonan.
