Event Details

‘Skelton’s monumental performance combined glorious warmth and colour with elemental expressive energy that taps something deeply human and intuitive.’ – Sydney Morning Herald

From the vocal and dramatic demands of Wagner’s Ring Cycle to the pathos and power of Britten’s Peter Grimes, Skelton’s astonishing ability to give voice and life to a character has put him in hot demand from New York to Melbourne. His performances of Wagner and Mahler are well known to orchestra- and opera-goers, but in this debut recital at Melbourne Recital Centre we discover another side of this great artist, delving into his other musical interests, and revelling in the rare opportunity to spend time in musical conversation with an outstanding singer. Skelton and associate artist UK-based repetiteur Richard Peirson explore rarely-heard gems by composers both familiar and overlooked.

From Melbourne Recital Centre’s Director of Artistic Planning, Marshall McGuire:
‘Australian singers have always made their mark on the world, and Stuart Skelton now sits at the top of this list, frequently appearing at the great opera houses and concert halls of the world, acclaimed as one of the great heldentenors (‘heroic tenors’) of our time – so Stuart is not only a great performer, he’s a superhuman one.’
