Event Details

Elizabeth Sellars’s grandfather Vernon Sellars was a talented baritone who enlisted in the AIF in 1914, serving in Gallipoli and France where he was wounded in the last weeks of the war. Following his recovery in England, he studied the interpretation of modern English classics at the Royal Academy of Music in London, before returning to Australia at the end of 1919. ‘Time Present and Time Past’ combines the musical road discovered by Vernon Sellars in London after the war with a Haydn trio which also began its performance life in London. Bridging the past with the present, this concert also features a new work by Paul Grabowsky written for the Sutherland Trio as a tribute to his Grandfather who died at Gallipoli.

“Time present and time past
Are both perhaps present in time future
And time future contained in time past
If all time is eternally present
All time is unredeemable.”

T. S. Eliot

In 2015 Melbourne Recital Centre’s Local Heroes series shares the stories of our World War I heroes.

This concert is in tribute to Nurse Alice Ross King, a pioneering woman at the front and one of our ANZAC Local Heroes. To read the story, visit the Your WWI Local Hero tab above.
