9:30pm Andrew Gioia Trio
Trumpeter Andrew Gioia has been an active member of the Melbourne jazz and creative music scene for over two years since relocating there from Perth in 2013. He has toured nationally and recorded with the Mace Francis Orchestra, was the recipient of the Alan Corbet Scholarship, where he was commissioned to compose and perform a set of new music and in 2015 was accepted into the Dutch Improv Academy in the Netherlands, led by famed drummer Han Bennink. He currently leads the Andrew Gioia Quartet featuring James Mclean, Tamara Murphy and Andy Butler as well as his trio featuring Hugh Harvey and Marty Holoubek.
Tonight the Andrew Gioia Trio features Andrew Gioia on trumpet, Thomas Botting on double bass and Finn Ryan on the drums. Their debut performance features a set of raw, free-flowing improvisation threaded together by composed structures, ideas and melodies, not dissimilar to the works of such luminaries as Tony Malaby, Kirk Knuffke and Mark Simmonds.
