Event Details

With the freedom of a small band expressing the textures, colour and sound of a big band, Ten Part Invention have maintained their momentum as a major jazz ensemble for nearly 25 years.

With a mix of young and established Sydney musicians, the group has frequently been praised for the star line-up of strong individual voices and the brilliance of interplay between the musicians as they surge ‘like a turbo-charged steamroller’ (SMH). The young players draw from the experience of the older artists while they in turn enjoy the fresh ideas.

Further setting the group apart is their dedication to Australian-only compositions. With over 70 original pieces in its repertoire, the ensemble holds a unique place in Australia’s musical landscape.

Following some interstate performances this year, including The Valley Jazz Festival, the band plans to tour abroad in the next year or two to celebrate their 25th anniversary and leader John Pochée’s 70th birthday as well as launch commemorative projects for pianist and composer Roger Frampton – so stay tuned to this remarkable ensemble!

Ten Part Invention: John Pochee (drums) Warwick Alder (trumpet) Miroslav Bukovsky (trumpet, fugelhorn) James Greening (trombone, bass trombone) Ken James (tenor, soprano saxophone) Andrew Robson (alto saxophone) Sandy Evans (tenor saxophone) Bob Bertles (alto/baritone saxophone, clarinet) Paul McNamara (piano) Steve Elphick (bass)
