The Sonus Ensemble at The Karijini Experience

Tura’s Sonus Ensemble featuring Kimberley singer-songwriter Stephen Pigram, percussionist Genevieve Wilkins, cellist Tristen Parr and flautist Tos Mahoney are taking part in The Karijni Experience at Karijini National Park in the Pilbara.

The Karijini Experience is all about sharing Indigenous culture and raising awareness of the Banjima People and their direct neighbours and extended families cultural and spiritual connection to these special places across the Pilbara.

The first Sonus performance is on Thursday, 8 April at the bottom of Kalamina Gorge for ‘Music in the Gorge’ – performing amongst some of the oldest rocks in the world. Opening the concert is a WASO String Quartet featuring Rebecca Glorie and Cerys Tooby on violins, Rachael Kirk on viola and Fotis Skordas on cello.

On Saturday, 10 April, The Sonus Ensemble will be performing a set in The Yurlu Lounge featuring a line-up of WA musicians including Vikki Thorn, The Yabu Band, Tre Amici, The Blackstone Ramblers and For Sure.

Members of the Ensemble will also lead a Soundings Workshop on Friday morning, 9 April from 9am to 10am exploring improvisation and soundscape creation. If you have an instrument bring it along, but everyone has a voice and there is endless found objects to create simple percussion from.

Sonus brings together diverse and vibrant groups of artists together for communities to experience empowering music and sound worlds. It’s a meeting of cultural forces, ancient and contemporary, through songs of outback Australia and newly commissioned music for this performance, reflecting the Kimberley communities and landscape travelled through.
