Event Details

What do you get when you mix Indian classical singing and the earliest Western opera music with new art music and electronica?... a celestial experience that takes you THROUGH THE CLOUDS...

THROUGH THE CLOUDS with MONTEVERDI RE-IMAGINED is a one-of-a-kind music lovers concert at 7:30pm Saturday 21 October at Magda Community Arts, 80 Boundary Road, Bardon. It features CHARULATHA MANI, an internationally acclaimed singer of Indian classical (Carnatic) music as well as Bollywood songs. For this project, Charu is exploring how the unique musical scales and melodies of Carnatic music can blend harmoniously with the earliest moments of European Opera and the recent moments of ambient electronica.

In MONTEVERDI RE-IMAGINED, the operatic side of the project, Charu teams up with early music performers to present excerpts from Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo (1607) interspersed with her composed responses, informed by her Indian vocal music tradition. The ambient electronica side of the project, THROUGH THE CLOUDS, is a divine meld of voice, keyboards and electronica resultant from Charu’s collaboration with composer/pianist LYNETTE LANCINI and electronica musician/sound artist LUKE JAANISTE.

All three artists currently reside in Brisbane’s northwest. LYNETTE LANCINI is a composer-improviser and group facilitator who develops embodiment practices and innovations within performance contexts. LUKE JAANISTE performs as HHAARRPP, an electronica music project featuring epic ambient music-scapes and a unique surround-sound quadraphonic set up. Special guests include Joseph Meyers (lute), David Jenkin (harpsichord), Margaret Caley (baroque violin), Ronin King-Rose (tenor voice), and Darshil Shah (Indian flute).

Featured non-Australian music: Charulatha Mani
