Winners of the 2009 Bell Award for ‘Best Australian Jazz Ensemble’, Melbourne favourties Way Out West bring their unique sound to Tanks.
Way out West have been described as creating something different – an entirely new sound – and this is certainly a true representation. The eclectic trumpeter / composer Peter Knight and Sri Lankan born West African percussion master, Ray Pereira, are at the heart of this remarkable collaboration.
Way Out West’s new project features Sydney based koto virtuoso, Satsuki Odamura and builds on a long history of integrating Asian instrumentation and approaches in a contemporary setting fusing irresistible West African influenced grooves with jazz inflected melodies. Inspired by the cultural vitality and diversity of Melbourne, Way Out West creates something miraculous; a truly new sound which will be sure to delight Tanks audiences!
