Event Details

SIMA’s Trigger Artist initiative kickstarts the career of outstanding young jazz talents by pairing them with established artists in performance and recording opportunities. For Winter Jazz 2017 we present our third Trigger Artist, trumpeter Thomas Avgenicos. Thomas is an emerging member of the Australian jazz scene, having performed alongside a number of leading jazz outfits including Ten Part Invention, Mike Nock Octet and the Mothership Orchestra. A finalist of the prestigious James Morrison Scholarship, Thomas has performed extensively in Europe and the USA with artists such as Chris Potter and James Muller.

Currently studying jazz performance at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music under Phil Slater, Warwick Alder and Mike Rivett, Thomas also leads his own electro-acoustic band Silver Talon, and co-leads The Avgenicos Brothers with his brother Michael. Expect to hear through-composed material consisting of songs, sounds and loops from a wide spectrum of influences, all designed to suit the acoustic space and setting. SPECIAL SUPPORT BY LAUREN WHITE & STEPH RUSSELL This performance debuts the songwriting collaboration between these two versatile, genre-crossing young jazz artists. Lauren White's sultry bass and voice complement Stephanie Russell's captivating and soulful vocals, creating a rich blend of youthful melodies and delicate harmonies.
