I knew Helena McIlwain as the niece of my dear friend Majella O'Shea. Helena died unexpectedly aged 19, around the same time as the plaintive opening theme for A Hundred Measures had come to me. The piece wrote itself quickly, and seemed to want to reflect Helena's initial (HM) by being literally made up of one (H)undred (M)easures (bars). I premiered the piece in the empty church, straight after Helena's funeral, after mourners had joined the family in a nearby hall for her wake.
While A Hundred Measures leans towards a medium level of technical difficulty, it requires a mature or 'advanced' sense of emotional holding on the part of the performer.
