Product details
The title, Seven Wells, is meant as an ambivalent reference to the seven deadly sins: anger, covetousness, envy, gluttony, lust, pride and sloth. Wells are typically thought of as sources of water (or light) and hence, life. However, occasionally one hears of people who fall into them and sometimes die trapped within. In an analogous way, although the seven deadly sins are usually thought of as pernicious character faults, vestiges of them are potentially conducive to positively constructive behaviour. For example, anger at a government's policy on the treatment of refugees could lead to a violent confrontation with public servants but it might also manifest itself as greater involvement in legitimate democratic processes.
The ballet unfolds over two acts and centres on the journey towards maturity and greater understanding of a person who, although initially fortunate enough to be presented with favourable prospects, jeopardises all by struggling to mitigate the extent to which the seven deadly sins influence his/her behaviour.
