Arafura Haze began as a quick sketch one morning in Darwin, during a residency with the Arafura Music Collective, whilst waiting to go to a rehearsal. We did a quick sight-read of it that morning, and it seemed like a good thing; but which, as is the way with many a good idea, was forgotten as it faded into the haze of life, time, and other projects. This now is a completely redeveloped version as (fortunately), having lost the full-score sketches I wrote at the time, I was forced to re-imagine and develop the original ideas in ways I probably could not have done back then. All is well!
An astute harp player may well notice that some sections may not (possibly) be written completely appropriate for the instrument. This was to be subject to a collaborative revision prior to performance; this, needless to say, will be done with the composer (me!) and whomsoever insightful and visionary harpist chooses to perform this work! ....and in the process, helps add one more substantial, and (dare I say) significant work to the repertoire, to stand by the till now defining work for the genre, that is, the Debussy!
