Argot : for recorder and strings [eParts] / Natalie Williams.

Argot is a French word meaning; a secret language/dialect, used only by closed groups of associates; in particular, groups of thieves and underground dwellers. It is a language or system of codes used by the group to prevent outsiders from understanding their correspondence.
I shaped the piece around this concept, using the Flute soloist as a 'speaker' attempting to share their unique language with us. At times the soloist leads the ensemble and weaves plaintive melodic lines over an unstable harmonic bass; attempting to convey a message. As the piece progresses, the soloist emerges from a murmuring crowd of a rumbling discussion, soaring above the conversation and trying to state its melancholy lines above the drowning force of the strings.
