Herein is a series of vignettes of life growing up in a beach environment, rendered as a series of bagatelles for flute and piano. No 1 is about ocean swimmers who dive from the rocks and swim back to the beach. No 2 is about the beach skies (first section) and under the water (second section). No 3 is about the constant navigation of power on the beach between the beach inspector and grommets (young surfers 10 - 15 years olds). No 4 is about hooking up with a big fish, and one can hear the fish put up a fight. No 5 is about the surfboat races, and my cousin was an Australian champion sweep (the guy who steers the boat), and maybe one can feel the swells in the middle section.
I used to hear lead flautists David Cubbin or Gordon Yemm play every Wednesday whilst studying in Lismore (accompanied by David Urqhart-Jones on piano). This was in the early and mid-1980s. So I've always wanted to write some fun pieces for flute and piano. Such a line-up became a part of me way back then. And I much prefer this fun and relevant Australian beach idea than say writing a pure music sonata for flute and piano.
