Product details

In celebration of the Royal Australian Navy's Fleet Air Arm (FAA) 75th Anniversary, 2022.

Beyond the Clouds, commissioned by the Shoalhaven Youth Orchestra, is an adventurous dedication to aviation. Since 1948, in peace and in conflict, the Fleet Air Arm division has provided air combat power to the Australian navy at sea.

The piece starts off ambiguously with the melody tiptoeing around the major third. With a steady rhythmic ostinato in the bass end and percussion, there is the depiction of an aircraft on the runway preparing to take off and the sense of something exciting about to happen. A melodious rolling chorale, which repeats throughout the piece, invites the listener to reflect on the sacrifice and dedication of those that have served their communities. Accompanied by the snare drum, bell tones in the brass and woodwind indicate the plane finally taking flight. With the introduction of the lydian mode into an augmented melody, there is the indication of a more adventurous atmosphere as the aircraft flies out across the ocean. This is only heightened with a modulation in the second half of the piece.

This accessible orchestral composition is the perfect addition for youth and intermediate orchestras, running for approximately 3 minutes 30 seconds.
