Black Emperor is intended for remote internet hook up, where the organs are in different locations in the world (or in the same town), as can be the sections of the string orchestra. The lag (latency) experienced with this kind of connection is an intentional part of the score, creating a fluttery, feathery effect. The work uses graphic notation that uses drone and glissandi as key elements in the work.
