This little piece is essentially a blues - yet being twisted around here and there, it takes on a different shape.
The music has all the characteristic chromatic 'blue' notes and harmonic extensions to make it very clearly bluesy in nature … And with the tonal centre on G, the chord progressions to C and D, keep it firmly grounded on the primary chords - as expected.
However, the piece takes some unusual twists and turns as it deviates from the standard twelve and sixteen-bar blues structures, and it doesn't swing. There is virtually no melodic repetition or development. Instead, it goes off on curious tangents. Indeed, the short Piu mosso interlude with its contrasting register and texture is like zoning out in a mini day-dream - just before the piece wraps up with the distinctive flavour and style of the blues.
For HSC and VCE purposes, students have my permission to extend the duration of the work within its given form, by including their own variations to the material.
