Product details
Broken Words was commissioned by the Helios ensemble, which premiered it in October 2020 in Massy, France. This work revolves around a text by Henry Kendall, a late 19th century Australian author and bush poet. The text chosen by the composer is taken from his « Songs from the Mountains ».
Broken Words is in 3 parts. The 1st and the last one evoke the immensity of the landscapes of the Australian desert, crushed with heat under an intense sun. Red sand for hundreds of kilometres, with a few clumps of tall green grass. A desert that seems uninhabited, but which reveals here and there the life that animates it. The central part is essentially rhythmic and repetitive. The rhythms give rise to onomatopoeia, snippets of words, which amplify, overlap, collide, coordinate and gradually give way to Henry Kendall's poem.
