Product details
As someone who does not know the Brisbane River intimately, I drew on its history to write something in music about its life and times, or my imaginings of these - its "Chronicles" as it were?
From before European settlement, when it was a spiritually important place and a vital food source for the Turrbal people, through to its devastating floods, shipbuilding, dredging, environmental concerns but also the enjoyment it offers the city and the people who live around it.
Rivers are always the life-blood of the communities around them and I wanted to show these many aspects in my work. As humans we are drawn to water, (rivers and seas) and on my own visits to Brisbane over many years, I have been a witness to its changing skylines.
The opening movement is titled Mangrove Dawn (Over Meanjin) and depicts a time before settlement. Black Water Rising is of course about flooding, in particular the devastating 1893 flood. River Games is much more light-hearted in nature as we enjoy the pleasures of the riverside and the finale Changing Skylines is a celebration dance by day and by night.
