Product details

Crossed Over explores different rhythmic combinations of two and three crotchet beat groupings in the piano part, and makes use of a restricted pitch set and range in the first two sections of the piece.

The double bass part provides a counter-melody to this with its own distinct integrity.

The drum part features cross-stick rhythms for the melody section.

These, and bass drum accents, should be varied to form a rhythmic interaction with the piano and bass. The concept is of ambiguous connection with respect to rhythm, harmony, and melody.

It is probably helpful for the drummer to have a copy of the piano and bass part to work from in rehearsal.

In the solo section the drummer should play more conventionally in an even 8ths jazz style.

The recording of Crossed Over on the album 'Gather' (Alister Spence Trio, ASM016) features a group solo over the form of the piece before the melody begins.

Published by: Australian Music Centre — 1 set of 3 performance parts (8p. -- A4 (portrait))

Difficulty: Advanced — The piano and double bass parts are quite difficult and employ rhythms across bar lines. Also the trio's parts are at times seemingly unconnected.
