Product details

Dance for the Daughters of Eve draws its inspiration and much of its musical material from the Gregorian plainsong Salve Regina. The work is not a setting of the Salve Regina text per se but takes both its name and its two principal melodic ideas from key phrases in the plainsong. The text is treated in a much less traditional way and the principal ostinato is based on a phrase within the plainsong that refers to "daughters of Eve". For the most part, single phrases or words from the original plainsong are used to carry the vocal sound in the style of a vocalise, and most of the words or phrases have been chosen because of their inherent rhythmic, articulatory or vowel colour qualities. The instrumentation of 'Dance' is very idiomatic of Eve Vocal Trio (and associates) as an ensemble and it seemed appropriate to draw on so many of the strengths of this particular group of musicians.

Published by: Australian Music Centre — 1 digital (PDF) facsimile score (47p. -- A4 (portrait))

Difficulty: Medium — Medium to difficult

Duration: 7 min.

Commissioned by Eve Vocal Trio.

The composer notes the following styles, genres, influences, etc associated with this work:
Modal in both meolody & harmony; stylistically, the work gives a slight nod to Celtic, Jazz and Minimalist influences

The composer notes:
Although the work was written so that Emma Horwood (one of the members of Eve) could both sing and play harp at the same time, this is not necessary for any subsequent performances. The instrumentation of the original work is very idiomatic of the three members of Eve and their husbands and friends (all professional musicians) but the forces can be modified, on request, to suit other circumstances. 'Dance for the Daughters of Eve' has also been arranged for Young Adelaide Voices (SSA choir) and piano (6 hands) in 2019.
