Product details

Diderot Once Said ... was first composed by Andrée Greenwell in 1989, as the closing song of her cycle Lovesongs/-Fragments, composed for The Shrieking Divas, a group of Melbourne-based women composers and musicians, founded by Greenwell with Jacqui Rutten as post-graduate music students of the VCA.

Using both historic and contemporary texts, Greenwell's song cycle explored the history of the Western love song since medieval times. The original work was composed for amplified voice, two violins, Yamaha DX7 keyboard, vibraphone and tape. The text is by the French philosopher Denis Diderot (1713-1784) from Dans la gout de la romance (In the taste of romance). The keyboard part will work well with a sustained electronic setting e.g. organ, possibly electronic piano. It is also possible to use a baroque organ or piano. The piece will work well either acoustically or amplified.
