Product details
This work was written in response to the birth of the composer's daughter Ursula, with each of the five movements reflecting aspects of the first six weeks of her life. Thus, mvt. 1 is a condensed sonata form piece portraying her birth and the exhilaration of this; mvt. 2 is a lullaby with the leaders of each section singing a solo for the child; mvt. 3 is a scherzo reflecting the happiness of her parents; mvt. 4 is a passacaglia depicting long sleepless nights; while mvt. 5 is a double fugue representing bright hopes for the future. The entire work is based upon motifs drawn from the opening swirling ostinato figure.
