The title of the duo Double Shadow is a play upon words. It refers to the old French term double (a variation form that serves as a background model for this piece) and, more obviously, to the instrument double bass. The "shadow" alludes to how material is passed and translated between the instruments, with one instrument casting a shadow onto the other.
The harmonic material of this work is deliberately simplified and reduced, with greater emphasis placed on dynamic gradations and the interplay across space between the two instruments. The performers should thus play with a degree of separation from each other on the stage.
