Product details

Often my music is a response to powerful sights and sounds gathered up over a few years and then expressed in musical form. This work was inspired by the graceful, swirling of a flock of birds in the sky, the intense swells of cicada song in summer, and ecological concerns about our changing climate.

Musically the work begins with soft waves of undulating modal chords that float, twist and shimmer like tendrils of a dream. There is a complex interplay of background and foreground as different voice-leading emerges within the chords. From this texture, a cello melody is established and heralds a change. The last third of the work is a kind of ecstatic dance where violins buzz like cicadas in an interlocking pulsing canon that travels in waves of intensity, and the low strings sing out as the voice of the earth with a heartfelt, bittersweet melody conjures up hope, suffering and love.

This piece is a reworking of 'Song to the Earth', a large-scale outdoor performance installation co-commissioned by City of Gold Coast, Bleach*Festival and the Queensland Government through the Regional Arts Development Fund and the Office of the Commonwealth Games and other funding sources.
