Product details

In the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, the Magnet Valley in remote western Tasmania was a thriving mining town, with a population of about 1000 people. Now it is being reclaimed by the lush temperate rainforest which is such a dramatic feature of the area. All that remains of the township are ruins of the mine and the foundations of many houses on the hillsides. In 2004, my partner Sarah Lloyd and I camped in the Valley as we researched the natural history of the area, and I recorded many of its birds. This piece was inspired by the Black Currawong - a bird endemic to Tasmania - and the feelings invoked by both the spectacular natural scenery and the human history of this place. The sounds are all derived from this bird's evocative call.
