With the nocturne being evocative of the night, this collection of eight for viola and piano is borne of my nighttime musings and reflections. It is quite a personal work, steeped in what has filled my mind and marrow for the past few years. It follows, then, that there is a programmatic aspect of much of this music. The development of the musical material, however, is very much informed by the more abstract elements of melody, harmony and rhythm inherent in the music rather than by extra-musical sources.
