Product details
Entasis III for trumpet trio is a re-composition of an earlier work of the same name for solo trumpet. The work integrates conventional performance practices with less common, yet idiomatic ones. The medieval technique of hocket combined with sustained notes occurs extensively throughout the work, resulting in very close, dissonant two and three part harmony. The trumpet's natural characteristics-including its tendency to diverge from equal temperament when non standard valve combinations are used-provided the conceptual basis of the work itself. Pitch material in the work's four sections are derived from two distinct valve fingering sequences, one of which is designed to highlight the tone-colour and microtonal differences that naturally occur on the instrument when standard and non standard fingerings are juxtaposed; and the other is designed to produce smooth melodic motion. The work's title stems from the idea that the microtonal digressions from equal temperament that occur throughout the work are analogous to the optical distortions from strict geometry that occur in ancient Greek architecture, one of which is 'entasis'.
