Product details

Europa is an exploration of aspects of one of the magnificent moons of Jupiter, and marks the four hundredth anniversary of Galileo's discovery of four of these moons in 1610.

After his historic discoveries were made, Galileo arrived at an Italian masked ball wearing an astonishing headdress on which the four newly discovered moons were mounted around a papier-mache representation of Jupiter; evidence of a spirited and lively personality.

I wanted to bring some of the liveliness of Galileo's personality into the music, and this has been achieved by fusing elements of jazz with contemporary art music. These elements are in the use of triple rhythms and syncopations, modal scales, the style of the interaction of contrabass and piano, and a prolonged use of pizzicato in the middle section.

The work uses the Aeolian and Mixolydian modes and their inversions. It is in ternary form (A, B, A'), with the Aeolian on E and B used in Section A, the Mixolydian on B and F#, and a combination of both modes used in Section A'.
