Product details
Felt is a medium slow tempo piece in D dorian minor composed for jazz piano trio with the addition of a glockenpiel part to be played by the drummer. It is a piece that continues an investigation into illusion created by melodic and rhythmic looping cells that have different relationships to each other and to the underlying beat. The piano melody is largely tonal (in D minor) and consists of a development of these cells. The piano part is constructed of loops of 2 beats in the left hand and 3 beats in the right.
The pizzicato double bass part is a high register cell that loops in 4 beats, and the glocjenspiel part loops every seven beats. After a while the drummer moves to playing on the kit.
The piano improvisation section settles into a more conventional jazz three beat rhythm following a new harmonic progression. The piece returns to a repeat of part of the melody in order to finish.
Published by: Australian Music Centre — 1 facsimile score (8p. -- A4 (portrait))
Difficulty: Advanced — All parts have different relationships to the underlying beat. The piano part is notated for both hands. The improvising section requires good knowledge of harmony and modes. The double bass and glockenspiel part are written 'across' the barlines.
