Firefly Reflection was composed as a companion to an earlier work entitled Firefly (1999). There is flexibility to perform these pieces as a pair or to present them in isolation. If performed together, the charged and contemplative atmosphere of Firefly Reflection serves to balance the darting and propulsive character of Firefly. A central thematic unit consisting of short repeating notes links the two pieces. The impetus for this gesture was the image of fireflies at dusk, emitting flashing light from their tails. In Firefly Reflection, reference to this feature can be heard at the very start. Here the note values expand and contract in a wave-like formation, whereas in Firefly the repeating notes project a syncopated and energetic identity. Over time, the range of Firefly Reflection reaches up into the clarinet's higher registers where wavering melodic ribbons of flowing, small pitch intervals are explored.
