Product details

I was delighted to write From a Quiet Place for Patricia Pollett since I admire her musicianship and her ability to bring forth the wonderfully warm voice of the viola. In performance she and her instrument are as one, and it may be the recognition of this that inspired From a Quiet Place, a work which I allowed to come from that 'quiet place' in which there is recognition of and response to the intuitive voice within.

Another influence was the magical sound of singing bowls and bells from Nepal. Their vibrating voices may be infinitely sweet as well as robust and dynamic. When struck or stroked with a wooden beater colourful, lingering, changing pitch vibrations are set up and overtones and harmonics are easily released from the fundamental pitch. As indicated in the score these bowls may be used in the performance of From a Quiet Place, either at the start of the work to set a mood, and/or in the second movement where indicated. But, of course, the use of singing bowls in any particular performance must depend upon the availability of suitable bowls, and also upon the confidence of the pianist to play them.

These things were in my mind as I wrote what may be described as a meditative piece. The three movements may be considered and performed as separate pieces each in their own right, or the three may be performed in sequence as a single work. It is my hope that I have created a work in which simplicity, line and tone are important elements, and I see the piano as fundamental in creating harmonic interest and giving warmth and richness to the musical fabric.
