The genesis of this work is a pair of undulating chords underlying the main theme which proceed to a downward progession in whole steps. The development is free, rhapsodic and evocative of the open ocean which is the backdrop of the opera. No particualr symbolism attaches to the role of the soloist; that is left to the imagination of the performer and the listener. In the final segment the oboist is invited to improvise on a given scale pattern, to which a certain latitude is allowed,

The basis of this work is an interlude from my opera 'The Circumnavigator', originally composed in 1979. As a separate piece it forms the second of my 3 Dances from 'The Circumnavigator for Trumpet and Piano'.

Among the influences informing the work is the arranging style of Gil Evans, especially his work with the trumpeter Miles Davis. This is not a jazz work however, except in respect of the improvisatory section as described.
