Product details

Golden Hours was written for performance by music students from 9th to 12th grade, who were members of the orchestra at St. Margaret's Anglican Girls' School, Brisbane. The occasion of it's first performance was The 13th Annual Festival of Australian Music which incorporated a celebration of 100 years of student music at St. Margaret's. Seven specially commissioned new works were performed at the Festival Concert which was held in the Concert Hall of the Queensland Performing Arts Complex on the 19th October, 1995.

Golden Hours is an orchestral version of a piece for piano, also titled Golden Hours which I wrote in memory of the pianist, composer, distinguished musician Dr. Franz Holford, who died on the 5th December, 1994. Some time before his death he had given me a beautifully bound leather manuscript book which I had put on my piano intending to look closely at his work. As I opened the book a little fragment of manuscript, a single melody fell to the floor. I saw it was beautiful and that it seemed to express feelings I was experiencing at that time. That melody was the influence which shaped both the work for piano and for orchestra. I enjoyed writing the piece, everything flowed and instead of loss and sorrow I understood that the influence of those whose lives we have touched remains.
