Product details
Haiku consists of a collection of 17 haiku poems by Japanese poets living in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The form is based on the four seasons beginning with Winter. Haiku is a very colorful work exploring various timbres available from simple piano preparations such as wooden pegs and pencil rubbers placed on the piano strings. Half of the work is sung; the other half uses various types of vocal delivery such as sprechstimme, vocal declamatory, and whispering. Haiku can be performed either in its entirety or in smaller combinations. A performance is possible without piano preparations.
Published by: Australian Music Centre — 1 facsimile score (64p. -- A4 (portrait))
Difficulty: Medium — a simpler version is possible if the choir only sings the main vocal part in unison. Most of the music ranges from easy to medium difficulty.

Includes performance notes.
The composer notes the following styles, genres, influences, etc in relation to this work:
The work was influenced by the prepared piano works of John cage and songs by George Crumb. Harmonically, they use modal and intervallic harmonies such as minor and major thirds (see 'Long Rain of May'), or the major second (see 'Deep is Autumn'.) This is because many of the songs were originally written as exercises in aural training.
While Haiku can be performed by a youth choir of medium aural skills, it can also be performed by a choir of mixed ages and mixed abilities. Should this be the case, the choral director has the discretion to determine who is to sing an appropriate part. An upright piano is preferable, however, with some slight changes a grand piano is also possible. Haiku can be performed without the piano preparations, but any direction regarding glissandi on the strings or stopping a note must be observed.
