Product details

The 3 movements are based on:

  1. a Bosnian traditional folk song "Yellow Quinces". The instrumental writing draws on the playing styles of tamburitsa ensembles - the tambura is a mandolin-like instrument Balkan found through much of the Balkans.
  2. movement 2 "Moonlight in Lombok" is inspired by a painting of the same name by Australian painter Geoff Harvey. Lombok is an Indonesian island near Bali, and the pointillist, minimalist style of the piece relates both to the painting and the gamelan ensembles of Indonesia
  3. "Balkan Rhumba" is a term used to describe the unique way gypsy performers in the 20th Century created a new musical style through combining traditional songs, a rolling rhythmic rhumba-like feel and instrumental virtuosity.
