Product details
Hectic Tulip is one in a family of works characterised by rapid interlocking rhythms. Conceived for physically distant musicians whose notes never touch, the series emerged as a creative response to the COVID-19 pandemic with much of the collection composed on request from musicians stuck in lockdown and presented as videos spliced together from home recordings.
The rhythmic game-like quality of the works stem from an interest in music that features intricate intertwined patterns including Gamelan, Flamenco, Aka Pygmy and Inuit vocal music, and is intended as a nod to my former teacher Louis Andriessen's iconic Hoketus for two dueling ensembles.
The 'Hectic' works have been created for a variety of instrumental combinations including microtonal pipas, found percussion and custom-built reed instruments. Each new realisation is idiomatic with regards pitch and duration and earns a new botanical name chosen by the performers. Hectic Tulip, composed for long-term Ensemble Offspring collaborators Claire Edwardes and Jason Noble, is the eleventh in the series.
