In the Hocket
In the Hocket was composed for the Icarus Quartet to perform at the 2022 Vienna Summer Music Festival. It is a contemporary piece drawing on the tradition sub-Saharan African approach to mallet percussion of interlocking rhythms and the western tradition of the hocket. The title is a reference to the North American funk term 'in the pocket' which means the rhythm or groove locking or sitting perfectly in place. The driving rhythmic and melodic motifs are varied and shared among the instruments and each player has solo sections in an improvisational style.
