Digital Sheet Music [PDF]: ScoreInterplay : for cello and piano [eScore] / Gerald Glynn.by Gerald Glynn (1980)

Product details
Interplay began as a piece for cello and harpsichord, but given the strong, muscular writing for both instruments, I soon decided to replace the harpsichord with the piano. The vigorous interaction between the two instruments is greatly influenced by my interest in the music of the North Indian tradition, where the solo sitar or sarangi is accompanied on drums (the tabla) - between these, there is agreement, dispute, rivalry and a jostling for the last word on a given phrase or motif, musical equivalents of hide-and-seek, cat and mouse pouncing upon one another, and leap-frog.
In terms of the Western tradition, this work has a particular significance for me in that, for the first time in my compositions, there is a deliberate recapitulation (starting at bar 120) of the opening material - the piano's arpeggiated chord and the cello's wide-interval response -, confirmation of the fact that a sense of return is an essential, often inescapable element of our musical tradition.
