Lament for Organ and Cello, exploring the softer side of the organ of Saint Patrick's Cathedral, recalls the disastrous fire that engulfed the Cathedral back in 1996. The first half of the work presents a lament theme in the cello, accompanied by the organ with it's soft Voix Celeste and Gamba. Below this is a 16' and 32' pedal tone that gradually grows into a cluster, representing a growing inferno. After reaching its peak, the cello plays a short retrospective lament before entering into bird-like dialogue with the organ. The organ then brings back the lament theme, now with more resonant harmony, whilst the cello accompanies it with a common celebratory theme as it's motivic basis. This builds to a final long sustained chord, with the organ's registration gradually decreasing to almost nothing before moving somewhere brighter.
