Product details
The Largo is an arrangement of the third movement of Bach's Sonata No. 3 for Solo Violin. The original Bach movement, while scored for a primarily melodic instrument, contains a latent polyphony, i.e. a dialogue of independent voices. In the arrangement for flute and bassoon the dialogue is made more transparent as a different instrument articulates each voice.
The premiere took place under the aegis of the Australian Academy of Science 28 May 2013. It was part of the first music recital to take place at the Academy, witnessing a symbolic handshake between music and science in Australia. It was presented by Professor Suzanne Cory AC President of the Academy.
As Professor Cory remarked, Bach is arguably the scientist's and mathematician's favourite composer. The new arrangement brings together the old and the new in a special way.
