Product details
In a 2006 image taken in polarized green light by the Cassini spacecraft's narrow-angle camera, the fractured and wispy surface of Saturn's moon Dione appears softly illuminated by Saturnshine. A thin crescent of sharp light glimmers at its edge. This is the mission of Cassini: to reveal the delicate harmonies of gravity, ice, and methane that encircle Saturn.
In the image, the dim reflected light of the planet is just enough to gently illuminate the moon's surface. It seems to mirror the sudden fractures of light that sometimes pierce the darker spaces of the human condition.
Luminæ Fracti explores these moments-these fissures of illumination within the long dark-through extended, gossamer-like translucent timbres idiomatic to its instrumentation. Elongated lines stretch into slivers of sound, drawing out the fragile beauty of dissonance with lovingly constructed sonic architectures.
The work concludes by invoking a deeply human ritual: the sensory incantation often used in therapy to anchor the self during panic or anxiety. Musicians speak fragments of this grounding exercise over one another, their voices spiraling and overlapping to reflect the cascade of out-of-control thoughts that characterize anxiety-until light, again, begins to break through.
