Product details

The inspiration behind this piece comes from the sculptures of Michelangelo's sculptures Four Prisoners / Quattro Prigioni that date from ca.1521 -1523 and are housed in Florence, Italy at the Galleria 'Dell Accademia. I recall being shocked when viewing the sculptures due to the raw power I perceived them to muster as they try to escape the marble block. The music tries to capture the inseparability of the prisoner and the marble, the textural differences within the sculpture but also the wrought emotion portrayed by the figures.

Making Angels has also been performed and broadcast around Australia by numerous ensembles including the Melbourne International Arts Festival 2005.

A companion piece for Making Angels will be composed in 2010 for alto flute, bass clarinet and piano commissioned by Syzygy Ensemble.
