This setting requires a competent choir to do justice to the tuning of the contemporary harmonies. While tonal, the work hints at the modal nature of older settings of the same text. Similarly there is a chant-like feel to some of the melodies of the sections for the lower voices and the opening intonation. The text itself is medieval, and is proper to Advent Sunday. Indeed it is often performed at Advent Carols and other carols services. The Palestrina setting of the same text was made famous by the Choir of King's College in Cambridge, broadcast as part of its annual service of Nine Lessons and Carols. It is hoped this contemporary setting of the text can provide an alternative option alongside the Palestrina and other settings. The ends of some sections have rests, and some pauses over the double bar line. These allow for space in a reverberant acoustic. The conductor may wish to allow considerable space in this way at the pauses. Additionally, no tempo marking has been given. Again, the building's acoustic and length of phrases will suggest an appropriate tempo.
