Product details

The first sketches for Oriel were written in an oriel window in Cambridge, England. An oriel window is a type of bay window which projects outwards from a building's wall. When sitting in the window you are both outside the walls of the building but also fully contained by the glass of the window. You are not outdoors but you are not completely indoors. You can be seen by people inside the walls but you can also be viewed by those outside. In an oriel space you can feel part of two worlds but you can also feel part of neither.
This piece is about that space between two places: a moment between one world and the next where neither is necessarily completely tangible but both are experienced. It is about feeling apart from others while sharing a space or feeling together with others even though there seems to be a barrier between you. The musical writing is deliberately conversational with melodic material weaving between parts drawing the players together and then moving them apart again.
