Product details
"Consider the sea. Do you find a strange analogy to something in yourself? All men live enveloped in whale-lines."
This quotation is from Herman Melville's Moby Dick. It is a story that tells of a whale, lonely and fearsome. One of the last lines of the story refers to the main character and the whale being both orphans of the sea.
The primary message of the Orphan of the Sea concerns the effects of noise pollution and climate change on sea animals. The call of one giant blue fin whale has been recorded at 52Hz; with all other whales communicating at 20-40Hz, it is dubbed the 'loneliest whale in the ocean'. The rise in frequency of its call may be the animal's way of adapting to noise pollution and rising sea levels.
This piece ties the idea of loneliness in ocean animals to human beings, considering how our impact on the environment is altering social adaptability. In the Orphan of the Sea, the 52Hz call (Ab1) rises to 55Hz (A1), which occurs after the counterpoint with a motoric propeller sound created by electronic breath playback. Ultimately, the piece is asking whether adaptation may culminate in new chances for communication with animals that can react to 55Hz or to further loneliness.
