Dedicated to Vera Hill, Alison King, Christine Hill
The composer acknowledge the influences of Kurt Weill in his Berlin period, especially The Threepenny Opera, and of interbellum French cinema in the motoring sequence.
From Act II, scene 3 of The Water babies. After observing the fate of the salmon, Tom is approached by a hungry otter who holds him responsible as a human creature for the present and future destruction of her habitat. The middle section contains an interlude for orchestra delineating the havoc wrought by the forthcoming 'horseless carriage'.
