Product details
Paganini Variations is a showpiece based on the 24th Caprice by the great violin virtuoso, Nicolai Paganini. It is inspired by the variations of Brahms, Liszt, Rachmaninov and Lutoslowski based on the same theme. Much like Gershwin's idea to link classical and jazz styles, the intention of this work is to create a musical collage using a broader range of styles, all combined to form one language. There are nine variations built on an overall traditional fast-slow-fast structure, with each variation moving through various "grooves" - walking bass, bebop, Bossa nova, gamelan drum and gypsy music. Its underlining romantic style evolved amidst listening to performances celebrating the 200th year of Frederic Chopin's birth. As such, there are brief allusions to his later etudes. Paganini Variations was written in January 2011 and premiered as a partially composed, part improvised work for the Plathner's Eleven Concert Series in Hanover, Germany. It was later extensively revised six months prior and until the day of the recording.
